What is your name and where are you from? Alexander Heinrichs from Aschaffenburg, Germany.
How long have you been taking pictures? For a long long time, over 34 years.
When did you get into photography and why? I started as a young boy with 14 years and for years it was my passion, 13 years ago photography becomes a full-time job for me.
What would you say your style is and has it changed throughout the years? If so why? Over such a long time for sure. Even after over 40 years I try to improve myself and make my pictures better.
How do you approach a shoot ? Do you pre-plan or is it a click and run? No I know before the shooting, what I want to do, I have the pictures in my head. But when these pictures are done, it is great to play around a little bit and let the creativity flow.
Is there an end goal you’re trying to achieve with your images, be it an aesthetic or story?
That is not always the same, sometimes I’m telling a story, sometimes I just want to create beautiful images.
Do you have an influences you can share? Not a special influence. I am open to all sides, very often I look around at the social media pages or in print magazines, just to get new ideas or getting inspired.
What inspires you? Walking through the world with eyes wide open.
Is there such a thing as a bad photograph? Not for me, a photographer should do pictures only for himself (herself) and the model. If they are happy, everything is perfect and the opinion of other people doesn’t matter.
Are you looking for a career in photography or are you just having fun?
No, there is no end of my journey, it is my profession but at the same time it is my passion and I love taking pictures and telling stories.
Which social media platforms do you use and why? Facebook to talk with my fanbase and promote my workshops, Instagram to just show my pictures, You tube to give something back to my followers, tipps, making ofs and so on.
Which photographers do you mainly follow on social media? I have a big amount of photographers I follow on Facebook and Instagram. Well known photographers and also young photographers, which nobody knows.
What are your thoughts on mobile photography versus DSLR / mirrorless? I only use cameras without mirror. In my opinion it doesn’t matter if there is a mirror in the camera or not
What’s your main go to camera, lenses and how did you make that choice? I’m using Sony mirrorless full frame cameras, because I am convinced of the quality. I love to work with wide open lenses, some of them really old (as I am) and also new lenses from Zeiss, Sony and Voigtländer. Regarding the lenses I am looking at the sharpness and the special look. Therefore my favourite lenses are a Minolta Rokkor 58/1.2 (40 years old) and a Zeiss Batis 85/1.8.
What is your dream location to shoot at? Africa, I love the light over there and especially the scenery of the Namib desert is breath taking for me.
Describe your favourite picture and how you captured it? As mentioned in the question above, I have already taking a pic at my dream location. The fashion pictures taken at 45°C at the Death Vlei in Namibia are my favourite pics. The combination of the sun in the desert, my studio flash and a polarizing filter gives them a special look right out of the camera.
In three words how would you describe your photography? I can’t do that, because I am not only a people photographer, I love also to take pictures in other fields: landscape, product, architecture.
How would you describe the current scene in photography?
There is a lot of movement in the scene, even cheap cameras are taking good pictures, young creative photographers are coming up. So in my case that pushes me to keep on going and do not rest on my success.
How do you feel about better quality cameras being put into smart phones? I also love to use my smartphone as a camera, the quality today is incredible. So why not!
What are your thoughts on expensive cameras? Do you think they create better images? No the photographer is taking the picture, not the camera. Most of the pictures you can realize even with a cheap camera.
